When the WNBA was founded, the New York Liberty became one of the charter members. Rebecca Lobo and Teresa Weatherspoon became the first New York Liberty players through the initial player allocation, and basketball fans in New York City began clamoring with excitement. Teresa Weatherspoon would soon lead the New York Liberty to the first WNBA Finals where they would fall to the Houston Comets, but the stage had already been set for New York Liberty basketball.
