When A Chorus Line first debuted off-Broadway on May 21, 1975, producer Joseph Papp was stunned when tickets for the entire run of the show sold out immediately. Soon, A Chorus Line moved to the prominent Shubert Theater, where the play ran for over 6,000 performances. Of the play’s impressive 12 Tony Award nominations, A Chorus Line won nine of them including Best Musical, Best Director, Best Score, and Best Actress. In addition to its numerous acclaims and honors, A Chorus Line also won the prestigious Pulitzer Price for Drama in 1976 – an honor rarely given to musicals.
A Chorus Line is set on a stage during an audition for a Broadway play. Director Zach, played by Mario Lopez, watches all the dancers while they sing and perform to “I Hope I Get It” and selects 17 dancers to continue with the audition. The remaining 17 men and women include Cassie, who has a complex relationship with Zach, and Paul, who relives his painful growth struggles with homosexuality. Each dancer of A Chorus Line takes the audience on a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows.
A heart-felt ending to the timeless song “One” concludes A Chorus Line as each of the play’s 19 characters take an individual bow. Audiences wait with bated breath as director Zach chooses the final eight dancers to the liberating tune of “What I Did For Love.” The 2006 revival of A Chorus Line includes the talented cast of Charlotte d’Amboise as Cassie, Deindre Goodwin as Sheila, and Bryan R. Knowlton as Paul. In April 2008, A Chorus Line entered a new phase of its long career when a touring branch of the play set off to perform across the United States.
Boasting countless awards and nominations, A Chorus Line is a must-see Broadway show that will entertain theater fans of all ages. With a fantastic line-up of talented new dancers, A Chorus Line is sure to be better than ever thanks to its innovative new choreography and sound.
