Over his lifetime, the acclaimed Alvin Ailey has produced 79 highly praised ballets and today his company continues to celebrate their founder’s vision. Renowned for its willingness to branch out and test new waters, “The Ailey” has continued to perform Alvin Ailey’s pieces as well as over 200 works produced by over 70 choreographers. Along with works of talented choreographers such as Ulysses Dove and Uri Sands, Twyla Tharp’s work has recently been featured in the company’s 2006 line-up.
Among the many pieces produced by Alvin Ailey, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater still keeps many of his works, in particular the widely acclaimed Revelations, Night Creature, and Cry. Alvin Ailey’s dances mirror his “blood memories” of Texas, where he was strongly influenced by the blues and gospel. Despite being pioneers of modern dance and movement, The Ailey is also recognized as cultural ambassadors of American culture.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has dazzled over 20 million people in 71 different countries, which won the school the prestigious 2002 National Medal of Arts to current director Judith Jameson.
