Urban Souls Dance Company Performs their Debut Dance Concert: Deeply Rooted! Join Urban Souls Dance Company as it showcases innovative contemporary works by Artistic Directors Harrison Guy and Walter J Hull in its debut dance concert Deeply Rooted. For years Houston has desired a modern dance company with an ethnic emphasis that could join the ranks of such national companies as Philadanco, Dallas Black Dance Theater, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Urban Souls Dance Company has accepted the charge of satisfying these desires. Urban Souls, a Houston based dance company believes in bridging gaps between the worlds of urban life and dance theater. The company embodies exceptional artistry and a profound sense of spirituality. Urban Souls is a dance company that presents a wide spectrum of works that are multicultural as well as visually appealing to all audiences.
The program opens with a solo, Inspired by the passion and commitment of the Urban Souls Dancers. USDC Artistic Director, creates an unforgettable heartfelt solo titled Deeply Rooted. The solo reflects upon the emotional connection and selfless commitment that is exemplified by the brilliant dancers that live, breath, and perform the vision and mission of USDC.
Scarlet Situation, a vibrant collaboration created by both USDC Artistic Directors. This provocative ballet presents an emotional display of artistry that deals with the Conception, Denial, and acceptance associated with the HIV/Aids epidemic. This piece was featured at Dance Houston 2006 and won “Best Artistic Achievement”.
Playlist takes the audience on a fun musical journey. It flirts with the notion of rhythms taking over our bodies and the idea of being in tune with musical lyrics. There is a song for every occasion; A soundtrack for life…..The music various favorites from my ipod’s playlist.
Reparation tells two stories of personal journeys of shedding layers of shame, guilt, and fear caused by past life experiences that include everything from of not being good enough to losing the love of your life.
The show will close with In the shadow of their wings. Set to the music of Samuel Barber and Phillip Glass, this signature piece truly embodies the Essence Urban Souls. This movement masterpiece is the latest creation of artistic director Harrison Guy. It represents a mixture of dance styles and genres that is filled with angelic motifs. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings serves as the canvas for the opening section that allows the dancers to paint a vivid piece that explores human relationships on Earth and the Journey to post-life spiritual existence. Phillip Glass’s Akhnaten:Funeral, inspires the energetic finale that promises to have the audience gasping for air. Undeniably breath-taking!
