Brian Johnson Biography

AC/DC

While Bon Scott took AD/DC to the Highway to Hell, Brian Johnson has the Stiff Upper Lip to continue AC/DC’s reign.

Brian Johnson: Early Life
Brian Johnson was born October 5, 1947, in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Brian Johnson was a born performer, joining the local church choir as a child. By 1972, Brian Johnson had joined a local glam-rock band, USA, as its lead singer. USA eventually changed its name to Geordie and had a Top 40 British single with “Don’t Do That.” Brian Johnson and Geordie released their biggest single “All Because Of You” in 1973. The song peaked at No. 6 on the British charts and was followed by the Top 20 hit “Can You Do It.”

Brian Johnson: Meets AC/DC
By the end the 1970s, glam-rock was going out of fashion in England and Geordie disbanded. Brian Johnson was nearly ready to give up on making it big in the music business, but in 1980, Brian Johnson decided to reform Geordie. As soon as Geordie had secured a new record deal, AC/DC called on Brian Johnson to audition for them. At the audition, Brian Johnson sang the AC/DC rock anthem “Whole Lotta Rosie” and the Ike and Tina Turner classic “Nutbush City Limits.” Brian Johnson impressed AC/DC with his ear-shattering vocal prowess, and they in turn offered him Bon Scott’s vacant spot as lead singer.

Brian Johnson: Making History
Only months after legendary AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott’s untimely death, AC/DC had returned to the rock scene with new singer Brian Johnson and a powerful new album Back in Black, signifying a new era in AC/DC’s history. Back in Black features the powerful rock’n’roll classics “Hells Bells,” "You Shook Me All Night Long" and “Back in Black.” The success of Back in Black silenced Brian Johnson’s critics and helped sell countless AC/DC tickets for the band’s sell-out 1981 Back in Black World Tour.

Brian Johnson: Rock On
Brian Johnson has continued to rock AC/DC fans’ worlds with his earth-shaking power vocals. For the last 28 years, Brian Johnson has contributed to some of AC/DC’s best albums including For Those About to Rock We Salute You, The Razor’s Edge and Stiff Upper Lip. With Brian Johnson as lead singer, AC/DC fans continue to buy AC/DC tickets.
