Malcolm Young: Beginnings
Malcolm Mitchell Young was born January 6, 1953, in Glasgow, Scotland. Malcolm Young was one of eight children born to parents Margaret and William Young. The Young family later settled in the Sydney, Australia, suburb Burwood in 1963. Malcolm Young would pursue music along with his older brothers Alex and George and younger brother Angus Young. In between tours with his band The Easybeats, George Young would give guitar lessons to both Angus and Malcolm Young. Alex Young formed his own group, Grapefruit, in 1967. Angus Young joined the group Kantuckee in the late 1960s.
Malcolm Young: Early AC/DC
When Malcolm Young was 20 years old, he decided to form his own band. After witnessing his younger brother Angus’ wild stage antics, Malcolm Young asked him to join. In 1973, Malcolm Young and Angus Young formed AC/DC. Malcolm and Angus chose the name after seeing it on their older sister Margaret Young’s sewing machine, believing that “AC/DC” – the conversion of alternating electrical current into direct current – described the band’s sound perfectly. The inaugural lineup of AC/DC consisted of Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, Angus Young on lead guitar, Larry Van Kriedt on bass guitar, Colin Burgess on drums and Dave Evans on vocals.
Malcolm Young: AC/DC Takes Off
After Dave Evans’ departure, Malcolm Young and Angus Young hired Bon Scott as AC/DC’s new lead singer. Malcolm Young and Angus Young along with Bon Scott soon took over songwriting duties. The trio would write some of AC/DC’s raciest lyrics and the greatest hits in AC/DC’s history, including “The Jack,” "It's A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)” and “Highway to Hell” that fans with AC/DC tickets have now come to expect at an AC/DC concert. When Bon Scott died in 1980, AC/DC picked up the pieces and began anew with singer Brian Johnson. Malcolm Young’s songwriting partnership with brother Angus Young strengthened and continues to this day on AC/DC’s latest album Black Ice.
Malcolm Young: On Tour
Over the years, fans with AC/DC tickets have seen Malcolm Young use a variety of guitars on stage. Malcolm Young often uses a 1963 Gretsch Jet Firebird, which was given to him by early AC/DC producer Harry Vanda. Fans with AC/DC tickets to the Let There Be Rock Tour saw Malcolm Young play a modified Firebird guitar. Malcolm Young customized the Firebird by stuffing socks into the pickups to reduce feedback and taking the red paint off to display its original brown maple color.
AC/DC tickets to the 2008 “Black Ice Tour” will feature Malcolm Young performing AC/DC hits “Rock’n’Roll Train,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Thunderstruck” on his customized classic Gretsch Jet Firebird guitar. AC/DC fans are snatching up any available AC/DC tickets to the “Black Ice Tour”, AC/DC’s first concert tour in eight years.
