The Black Crowes History (1989- )

The Black Crowes, possibly one of the best rock bands of all time, have been producing hits from the onset of their career some two decades back.

The Black Crowes: 1984-1989

What began as a revivalist band in Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Crowes Garden celebrated the blues-rock sounds that defined the ‘70s era. At the band’s center are the members and brothers Chris and Rich Robinson. Chris and Rich’s sounds were influenced by a number of artists including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Black Crowes: Begins Strong

In 1990, The Black Crowes released their first studio album entitled Shake Your Money Maker, which featured the hit singles “She Talks to Angels”, “Jealous Again”, “Twice as Hard”, “Sister Luck”, “Seeing Things”, and covered Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” which aided in the album’s climb to multi-platinum status with sales over three million. In support of their album, The Black Crowes went on tour with ZZ Top. After being fired from the tour, The Black Crowes embarked on an independent tour the following May, in addition to performing in the Monsters of Rock tour taking place in the Soviet Union.

The Black Crowes: Two Releases

In 1992, The Black Crowes were back at it again with the release of their second album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. The album made its debut at No. 1 on the billboard charts and featured the songs “Remedy”, “Thorn In My Pride”, “Sting Me”, “Sometimes Salvation”, and “Hotel Sickness”. Although void of a hit single, The Black Crowes next album Amorica reached gold-level status with sales over 500,000. The Black Crowes later went on tour in support of Amorica, making at stop in Tampa Bay, Florida opening for Grateful Dead.

The Black Crowes: 1999-2001

Clad with soul-inspired mixes, By Your Side was released in January 1999. More commercial in sound than its predecessors, By Your Side housed the radio-friendly tracks “Kickin’ My Heart Around”, “Only A Fool”, and “Go Faster”. The album did well on the charts, peaking at No. 3, however it didn’t sell as well as the other Black Crowes albums. Despite the disappointing sales, The Black Crowes were a success on tour.

In May 2001, The Black Crowes released their sixth studio album Lions. Making their home on rock radio were the tracks “Lickin’” and “Soul Singing”. That same month, The Black Crowes kicked off their month-long Tour of Brotherly Love with Oasis and Spacehog along as supporting acts. The Black Crowes toured the rest of 2001 adding Japan and Europe to their tour sites.

The Black Crowes: Dissolution

The Black Crowes parted ways in 2002 and band member Chris Robinson, under a deal with new management, patroned two albums New Earth Mud and This Magnificent Distance released in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Rich Robinson also produced a solo album in 2004 Paper. Members of The Black Crowes came together at the Jammy Awards in 2004 to perform “Sometimes Salvation” with Gov’t Mule. In 2005, The Black Crowes reunited and began touring later that year which included a summer component alongside Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers where The Black Crowes performed five sold out shows in San Francisco.

The Black Crowes: 3 Snakes, 1 Charm

In July 2006, The Black Crowes released their fourth album Three Snakes & One Charm, which featured the song “Blackberry”. As part of the promotional tour, The Black Crowes teamed up with Ratdog and Bruce Hornsby for the Furthur Festival in the summer of 2007. In 2006, The Black Crowes released a two-disc compilation album entitled The Lost Crowes which featured the two unreleased tracks “Band” and “Tall”.

The Black Crowes: At the Roxy

Bred from three nights of performances at The Roxy in Los Angeles, The Black Crowes released their album “Live at the Roxy” on July 10, 2007. The Black Crowes performed a multitude of “One Night Only” shows in support for their soon to be released album Warpaint; during this time the band released the track “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution”. The album Warpaint hit stores in March of 2008 under the band’s independently owned Silver Arrow label. Warpaint charted at No. 5 and The Black Crowes embarked on tour. The Black Crowes are currently touring in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and in the US where the tour will end in San Francisco.
