Crosby Stills Nash and Young History

Crosby Stills Nash and Young have had a long history together and their legacy extends into the 2000s.

CSNY: Formation
Crosby, Stills Nash and Young was originally just Crosby Stills and Nash, and the trio earned a fairly large following before adding Neil Young. The original formation of Crosby Stills & Nash was David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash. Individually the three members of Crosby Stills & Nash were apart of The Byrds, The Hollies, and Buffalo Springfield – all of which came to an abrupt end after they decided to form Crosby, Stills and Nash. The trio released a self-titled album which spawned two Top 40 singles.

CSNY: Neil Young
With the popularity of Crosby Stills and Nash already established the trio tacked on a fourth partner in musical crime. Neil Young joined Crosby Stills and Nash making them the highly anticipated super-group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young immediately released Déjà Vu. It was around this time that the infamous Kent State shootings happened and upon hearing about the news, Crosby and Young wrote a song called “Ohio” which would become one of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s better known hits. After the success of “Ohio,” Neil Young ventured out on a solo career and had huge successes with his singles “Heart of Gold” and “Alabama”.

CSNY: Side Projects
After Neil Young’s solo career took off and Crosby Stills & Nash took a hiatus, members Graham Nash and David Crosby joined forces as a duo and released the album Graham Nash David Crosby. The album proved successful and reached No. 4 on the pop charts. During this time David Crosby also spearheaded a reunion tour for the original Byrds. Meanwhile Neil Young was still touring and making music with his other band Crazy Horse.

CSNY: CSNY Reunion
After the members of Crosby Stills Nash and Young finished with their respective side projects every once in a while the trio Crosby Stills and Nash would tour together. During these tours Crosby Stills and Nash would play all of their old favorites and new songs written by each member including “Grave Concern”, “Carry Me”, and “First Things First”. Crosby Stills Nash and Young’s label compiled a best of release entitled So Far which topped the charts.

CSNY: Daylight Again and Others
The ‘80s saw the return of new music from Crosby Stills and Nash. After respective solo albums from Stills and Nash CSN released Daylight Again, which blended well with the music of the time from bands like Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty, Daylight Again also placed Crosby Stills and Nash in the top ten in 1982. In 1988, Crosby Stills Nash and Young released American Dream which would go platinum and mark the quartet’s first studio album in 18 years.
