Lil Wayne: Life Growing Up
Born on September 27, 1982, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. would grow up in the Crescent City – New Orleans, Louisiana. During his childhood years, Dwayne Carter was a gifted student with a knack for drama and music. At age 11, Dwayne Carter would record freestyle raps on the answering machine of Bryan Williams, Cash Money Records owner and rapper who later went on to mentor the young Dwayne Carter. As a teen, Dwayne Carter joined the Cash Money collective “Hot Boys” – a rap group that would help catapult Dwayne Carter into rap superstardom.

Lil Wayne: Hot Boys
The then 15-year-old Dwayne Carter – better known by his stage name “Lil Wayne” – along with rappers Juvenile, B.G., and Turk joined forces as the group Hot Boys in 1997. Lil Wayne and the Hot Boys debuted with the 1997 album Get It How U Live followed by their major-label debut Guerilla Warfare in 1999. Guerilla Warfare soared to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and reached Top 5 status on the Billboard 2000. Lil Wayne and the Hot Boys scored hits in “We On Fire” and “I Need a Hot Girl.”

Lil Wayne: Tha Block is Hot in 1999
At age 16, Lil Wayne made his solo debut with the 1999 album Tha Block is Hot which enjoyed double-platinum success and ascended the Billboard album charts all the way to No. 3. The leadoff single was “The Block is Hot,” which – along with its corresponding music video – helped to put Lil Wayne on the map as a new artist. Following the success of Tha Block is Hot, Lil Wayne collaborated with his Hot Boys band mates and Big Tymers on the hit single “Bling Bling.”

In 2000, Lil Wayne followed up Tha Block is Hot with album Lights Out which spawned the lead single “Get Off the Corner,” which showed a marked improvement in Lil Wayne’s lyrics and style. Lil Wayne: Tha Carter I & II
Lil Wayne continued to improve on his lyrics, themes, and rapping style, which was evident in Lil Wayne’s 2004 album Tha Carter. The picture on the front of Lil Wayne’s album features Lil Wayne sporting dreadlocks, which has since become his signature look. With Tha Carter, Lil Wayne enjoyed even more success on the charts and in album sales to boot. Lil Wayne released a hit single in “Go DJ,” and collaborated with T.I. on Destiny’s Child’s “Soldier.”

Lil Wayne: Tha Carter III
Lil Wayne’s next album Tha Carter III was released in June 2008, selling more than a million copies in its first week alone. The single “Lollipop” became the first-ever No. 1 hit and Top 10 single for Lil Wayne. “Got Money” featuring T-Pain was also a success for Lil Wayne. Thanks to a host of hits, Tha Carter reached double-platinum status in July 2008.

Lil Wayne continued to guest star on a slew of R&B and Hip-Hop singles, such as Lloyd’s “Girls Around the World,” Usher’s “Love in this Club, Part II,” Cassie’s “Official Girl,” T.I.’s “Swagga Like Us,” and Kevin Rudolf’s “Let it Rock,” among others.
