James Hetfield Biography

The father of Thrash has gone from troubled youth to musical icon to millions

James Hetfield: Early Life
Early experiences with religion and the frailty of life gave a young James Hetfield plenty to write songs about at an incredibly young age. Picking up the very un-Metal instrument of the piano at the age of nine, James Hetfield showed a natural inclination for music. The guitar soon replaced the piano as the instrument of choice for James Hetfield, but his singing voice also came along nicely. The angry young man found his true passion when he encountered early versions of Metal like Black Sabbath and, most importantly, Motorhead.

James Hetfield was a part of many bands in his youth and struggled to find a single musical group or direction to take. James Hetfield’s love of Motorhead eventually led to him also discovering the band Diamondhead, who was laying the groundwork for Thrash Metal. A very famous ad for a drummer in a California paper caught the attention of Lars Ulrich, and the two met. Eventually James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were joined by bassist Ron McGovney and finally the super-talented but destructive guitarist Dave Mustaine.

James Hetfield: Metallica
The lyrics by the union of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich played well with the influential guitar styles of Dave Mustaine, and the band that became Metallica was well on its way. Escaping the Glam Los Angeles scene, Metallica turned towards San Francisco, where a new genre of Metal was being pioneered. Thanks to the complex and driving riffs of bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, the San Francisco scene produced a cutting-edge version of Metal known as Thrash. Dave Mustaine eventually left Metallica, but the rivalry between James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine actually led to more innovation in Thrash and Metal as a whole.

James Hetfield made a huge mark on this new genre. His throaty and growling vocals set a standard that an entire generation of musicians would follow. The lyrics penned by James Hetfield also inspired many young men and women to identify with the music and even as a small band, Metallica tickets sold well in whatever small venue they played. With changes at the lead guitar and bass positions, the charismatic James Hetfield on vocals and the trademarked drumming of Lars Ulrich have been the only two constants.

James Hetfield: Creating Modern Metal
The writing team of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich produced many acclaimed Metallica albums like Kill ‘Em All and Master of Puppets, but the duo would truly experience their mainstream arrival thanks to the watershed Metallica album The Black Album. With lyrics focused like never before, James Hetfield wrote classic songs like “Enter Sandman”, “Sad But True”, “The Unforgiven”, and “Nothing Else Matters” on The Black Album. “Enter Sandman” made the characteristic voice of James Hetfield famous.

The Black Album became the definitive album for modern Metal and influenced a great many people to pick up instruments. Earlier Metallica albums like Ride the Lightning had a huge impact on heavy bands, but The Black Album brought more attention to Metallica and helped sell Metallica tickets like no other album has. The new attention to Metallica opened the musical horizons of millions of fans and introduced Metal to an audience that had written it off thanks to decadent Glam bands.

James Hetfield: Turning A New Page
As the beast that is Metallica continued to grow, James Hetfield continued to change his songwriting style and musical outlook. James Hetfield also started working with vocal coaches to not only produce stronger vocals but to protect his voice from damage. The vocal training has added another dimension to the capabilities of James Hetfield, and he has used this to record songs with Metallica that go into everything from acoustic, to traditional songs, to grand orchestra numbers.

The evolution of James Hetfield and Metallica has rolled on through the years and the Grammy Awards have recognized the place of James Hetfield in modern music. The small but noticeable changes in songwriting and voice has helped sell more Metallica tickets than ever before, but fans long for a return to the days of “One” and “The Four Horsemen”. James Hetfield’s writing on Metallica’s new album Death Magnetic is seen as a return to the old and has brought back many older fans to the fathers of Thrash.

James Hetfield: Family
Unlike his image on stage, James Hetfield is a family man at home. Having the stabilizing effect of a wife and three children has been a great thing for James Hetfield and has helped him overcome a great deal that not even his music could defeat. Putting his troubled past behind him has had an effect on James Hetfield’s songwriting and the darker lyrics of Metallica have gained a new edge without compromising their emotion integrity.

James Hetfield: Equipment

Longtime fans with Metallica tickets know that James Hetfield was one of the key figures that helped ESP Guitars become one of the choice brands in Metal. The adoption of ESP guitars by Metallica members James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett in the 1980s made the guitar brand the favorite guitar of the Thrash movement, and ESP guitars found their way into the hands of other musicians like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Kerry King of Slayer.
