Hangin’ Tough: Background
After lukewarm sales of New Kids on the Block’s self-titled debut album, the New Kids bounced back with 1989’s Hangin’ Tough. Deciding to move away from their bubblegum pop sound, New Kids on the Block members Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and Jordan Knight lobbied behind the scenes for a funkier R&B sound for New Kids on the Block. Soon each member began receiving a producer credit for his input on the then-new album, Hangin’ Tough. “Hangin’ Tough” was written by New Kids on the Block and New Edition producer Maurice Starr.

Hangin’ Tough: Success
“Hangin’ Tough” was New Kids on the Block’s fourth hit single from 1989’s Hangin’ Tough. The album sold over 8 million copies and turned New Kids on the Block into Pop royalty. In the span of a year, the New Kids on the Block went from opening for teen mallrat Tiffany to performing on their own headlining concert tour, selling thousands of New Kids on the Block tickets to eager teen pop fans in the process.

New Kids on the Block fans were soon busy buying anything and everything to do with New Kids on the Block including posters, pillowcases and plenty of New Kids on the Block tickets. “Hangin’ Tough” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and helped New Kids on the Block win Best Pop/Rock Album and Best Pop/Rock Group at the 1990 American Music Awards.

Hanging’ Tough: On Tour
New Kids on the Block reunited with all original members – Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight and Jonathan Knight – in 2008 to record The Block, the group’s first album in 14 years. New Kids on the Block fans can now see the group on tour in support of The Block!
