New Kids on the Block  New Kids on the Block

The youngest member of New Kids on the Block went from teen idol in the early 1990s to Broadway star in the 2000s.

Joey McIntyre: The Beginning
Joey McIntyre was born in Needham, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1972. Joey McIntyre was the youngest of nine children. A natural performer, Joey McIntyre began working at the Footlight Club, the oldest community theater in Massachusetts, at age 6. Joey McIntyre also spent time performing with the Children’s Theatre of Boston before joining the boy band New Kids on the Block in 1984.

Joey McIntyre: New Kid
Joey McIntyre was only 12 years old when he joined New Kids on the Block, making him the youngest member of the group. The age difference and the close-knit relationship the other four members – then 15-year-olds Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood, 14-year-old Jordan Knight and 16-year-old Jonathan Knight – already shared as schoolmates made it difficult for Joey McIntyre to find his place in the group, at first. After months of hard preparation and rehearsal, New Kids on the Block were ready to release their first album.

Joey McIntyre: Newfound Fame
In 1986, Joey McIntyre and New Kids on the Block released their first self-titled album on Columbia Records. The bubble-gum pop record featured the singles “Be My Girl,” “Stop it Girl” and “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time).” While fans were slow to buy the album and New Kids on the Block tickets, Joey McIntyre and New Kids on the Block didn’t give up.

In 1988, NKOTB released Hangin’ Tough, featuring the hit singles “You Got It (The Right Stuff),” “Please Don’t Go, Girl,” and the title track. The album sold over 8 million copies, and soon Joey McIntyre became an in-demand teen idol. New Kids on the Block tickets were selling out fast as fans quickly snatched up anything to do with New Kids on the Block.

In 1990, Joey McIntyre and NKOTB released their first No. 1 album Step By Step, fans could not get enough of New Kids on the Block, buying posters, pillowcases, dolls and plenty of New Kids on the Block tickets. New Kids on the Block disbanded after their 1994 album Face the Music.

Joey McIntyre: New Career
Joey McIntyre released his first solo album Stay the Same in 1999, featuring the singles “I Love You Came Too Late” and the title track. In 2001, Joey McIntyre made his Broadway debut as Jonathan in the musical tick, tick... BOOM. Joey McIntyre also starred as Fiyero in the Broadway production of Wicked in 2004 and as Fonzie in the off-Broadway musical Happy Days in 2006.

Joey McIntyre has appeared in various TV roles including a stint on the show Boston Public in 2002 and the reality show Dancing with the Stars in 2006. After New Kids on the Block, Joey McIntyre made his film debut in The Fantasticks in 1995 followed by Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding in 2004.
