Pearl Jam History (1990- )

Breaking records in their time and refusing to submit to commercial fame, Pearl Jam still rocks the hearts of loyal fans.

Pearl Jam: The Beginning

Pearl Jam was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1990. By the time of Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten was released in 1991, the band consisted of members Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder and Matt Cameron. Having a unique style in the up and coming grunge era, Pearl Jam was able to outlast most of their counterparts such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden by selling over 30 million records.

Pearl Jam: Ten

In August 1991, Pearl Jam released their first album with Epic Records entitled Ten which they took from basketball all-star Mookie Blaylock’s jersey number. The album was slow to sell at first but by mid 1992, the album went certified gold and reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts. The album included the hot singles “Alive” which reached No. 16 on the rock charts, “Even Flow” which reached No. 3 on the rock charts and “Jeremy” which reached No. 6 on the rock charts. Pearl Jam soon went on the road in 1992 to promote the Ten album with a headline tour at Lollapalooza with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden and Ministry. The album later earned Pearl Jam a coveted spot on MTV’s Unplugged concert series and four MTV Music Video Awards and the record breaking status of going 12-times platinum.

Pearl Jam: Vs.

In 1993 Pearl Jam released their second album entitled Vs. which sold a record 950, 378 copies in its first week of release and spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 list. The album included the singles “Daughter,” “Animal,” “Dissident” and “Go” which both reached No. 3 on the rock charts. Coming from the success of Ten, Pearl Jam decided not to do as much commercial publicity by refusing some interviews, television appearances and the making of any music videos. Vs. later went on to become seven-times platinum.

Pearl Jam: Vitalogy

In 1994 Pearl Jam released their third album entitled Vitalogy. The album reached the No. 1 spot on the charts in the US, Australian, Sweden and New Zealand all at once making it the second fastest selling album in history behind Vs. at that time.  The album was first released on vinyl and then later sold on CD and cassette with a record breaking 877,000 albums sold in its first week alone. The album featured the hit singles “Spin the Black Circle” which reached No. 11 on the rock charts and a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance, “Not for You” which reached No. 12 on the rock charts, “Corduroy” which reached No. 13 on the rock charts, “Immortality” which reached No. 10 on the rock charts and “Better Man” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for a total of eight weeks.

Pearl Jam: Falling from Grace

In August 1996 Pearl Jam released their fourth album entitled No Code which debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts but quickly fell back down the charts. The album included the singles “Hail, Hail” which reached the No. 9 spot on the rock charts, “Off He Goes” and “Who Are You” which reached No. 1 on the rock charts. Pearl Jam did very little touring to promote the album which started the work of Pearl Jam’s fifth album. In 1998 Pearl Jam released Yield, their fifth studio album which debuted at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard charts but quickly fell down like their fourth album. The album featured the singles “Given to Fly” and “Wish list.” Pearl Jam soon hit the road with the Yield Tour, their first tour since 1994.

Pearl Jam: A New Start

In May 2000 Pearl Jam released their sixth album entitled Binaural which only sold 700,000 copies, the first Pearl Jam CD to not go platinum. The album included the singles “Nothing As It Seems” which reached No. 3 on the rock charts and “Light Years” which reached No. 17 on the rock charts. After making the decision to record every performance from the 2000 Binaural Tour live and release it, Pearl Jam became the only band to release 72 live albums and set a record for most albums to debut in the Billboard 200 at the same time.

Pearl Jam: Riot Act

In 2002 Pearl Jam released their seventh album entitled Riot Act. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard chart and later went certified gold. The album included the singles “I Am Mine” which reached No. 6 on the rock charts and “Save You.” In 2003 Pearl Jam started touring with the Riot Act Tour. After the tour Pearl Jam left Epic records following the end of their contract. Pearl Jam later went on to record the single “Man of the Hour” for the motion picture Big Fish that later landed the band a Golden Globe nomination.

Pearl Jam: 2006-present

In 2006 Pearl Jam signed with Clive Davis’ J Records and started working on their eighth studio album entitled Pearl Jam featuring the hit single “World Wide Suicide” which reached No. 1 on the rock charts. Later in 2006 Pearl Jam started on their 2006 world tour in both the US, Australia and Europe. In 2007 Pearl Jam headlined the Lollapalooza in Grant Park. Pearl Jam is currently working on their ninth studio album with producer Brendan O’ Brien who the band hasn’t worked with since 1998’s Yield album. Pearl Jam is also currently headlining the Bonnaroo Music Festival with a 12-day tour of the Eastern United States beginning in June.
