Beyonce Knowles: Childhood
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyonce Knowles is the daughter of Mathew and Tina Knowles and older sister of Solange. Beyonce Knowles enrolled in dance classes as a child before discovering a love for singing shortly after performing in a school talent show. At age seven, Beyonce Knowles delivered a stirring rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine” at her first talent show and would soon start gaining attention from the local press.
An eight-year-old Beyonce Knowles along with friend Kelly Rowland auditioned for and starred in the girl group Girl’s Tyme, which attracted a national audience and later starred on the popular show Star Search. Girl’s Tyme would ink a deal with Elektra Records but were dropped before an album could be released.
Beyonce Knowles: Destiny’s Child
In 1993, Girl’s Tyme – now known as Destiny’s Child – would perform at local events and toured for four years before signing with Columbia Records in 1997. Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett debuted Destiny’s Child, which spawned the hits “No, No, No.” The Writing’s on the Wall dropped in 1999 and featured songs “Bills, Bills, Bills,” “Jumpin’ Jumpin’,” and Grammy-winning “Say My Name.” Now a trio, Destiny’s Child continued to churn out the hits, including “Independent Women,” “Survivor,” and “Bootylicious.”
Beyonce Knowles: Going Solo
During her time with Destiny’s Child, Beyonce Knowles also ventured into solo projects – collaborating with other artists and starring in the television movie Carmen: A Hip Hopera, box-office hit Austin Powers in Goldmember, and The Fighting Temptations. Beyonce Knowles’ debut solo album Dangerously in Love was released in June 2003 and yielded a pair of No. 1 singles in “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy.” Beyonce Knowles enjoyed multi-platinum and Grammy-winning success for Dangerously in Love.
Beyonce Knowles: Destiny Fulfilled
Following solo efforts by all three members, Destiny’s Child would reunite for its final album Destiny Fulfilled. Top 40 songs “Lose My Breath,” “Soldier,” “Cater 2 U,” were fan and radio favorites. After a 2005 world tour and a compilation album entitled #1’s, Destiny’s Child were hailed as the world’s best selling female group in music history.
Beyonce Knowles: More Solo Success
Beyonce Knowles continued to pursue her solo career, starring in The Pink Panther and contributing the song “Check On It.” In late 2005, Beyonce Knowles delivered a Golden Globe-nominated performance in the film Dreamgirls, for which she provided the song “Listen.” Both films sold a ton of tickets and solidified Beyonce Knowles’ name as a viable force in the acting world.
After Dreamgirls, Beyonce Knowles headed back to the studio, co-writing and co-producing all the songs on album B’Day. Released in September 2006, B’Day debuted at No. 1 on the charts and has since become three-times platinum.
