Cher History: Sonny & Cher Days
In the 1960s, Cher and husband Sonny Bono starred in the film Wild on the Beach along with the low-budget film Good Times. While neither film made a splash by any means, that didn’t stop Sonny Bono from venturing on, producing and writing the movie Chastity. The film served as the dramatic debut for Cher but, like the Sonny & Cher movies that came before, did not make much noise.
Cher History: Turning Point
In 1982, Cher starred as “Sissy” in the critically acclaimed Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean after starring in the Broadway production of the same name. Next up for Cher would be the 1983 drama Silkwood, featuring cast mates Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell. Cher delivered a stellar performance as lesbian “Dolly Pelliker,” earning accolades, an Academy-Award nomination for and a Golden Globe win for her supporting role.
Cher History: Taking the Lead
After earning the lead role of “Rusty Dennis” in 1985’s Mask, Cher established herself as a legitimate actress, winning the award for “Best Actress” at the Cannes Film Festival and helping the film draw in over $48 million in ticket sales. After Mask, Cher would continue to earn positive reviews as a leading lady, especially in 1987’s thriller Suspect, fantasy film The Witches of Eastwick, and romantic comedy Moonstruck for which Cher won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for “Best Actress.”
Cher History: Mermaids & More
In 1990, Cher would co-star alongside Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder, and Christina Ricci in the box-office success Mermaids and contributed two songs, “Baby I’m Yours” and “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss),” to the movie soundtrack. Cher starred in the 1996 movie Faithful as “Margaret” alongside Ryan O’Neal and Chazz Palminteri before co-executive producing and appearing in the HBO drama If These Walls Could Talk. Cher’s latest film appearances have included 1999’s Tea with Mussolini and 2003’s Stuck on You.
Cher History: Future in Movies
