Pussycat Dolls: Burlesque Beginnings
Getting its start as a Los Angeles-based burlesque troupe in 1995, the Pussycat Dolls were the brainchild of choreographer Robin Antin. The Pussycat Dolls featured a number of guest vocalists clad in old-fashioned pin-up costumes while singing a collection of Pop standards. From 1995-2001, the Pussycat Dolls played ever Thursday night at The Viper Room before moving to The Roxy. It wouldn’t be long before the Pussycat Dolls name would be plastered on magazines, music-video channels, movies, and more.
Pussycat Dolls: Move to Music
Thanks to their widespread, international popularity, the Pussycat Dolls were transformed into a Pop-music group and were signed to Insterscope Records. Troupe members including Carmit Bachar, Cyia Batten, Kasey Campbell, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, and Kimberly Wyatt were brought along from the original group. In 2003, lead singer Nicole Scherzinger (former member of reality show Popstars byproduct Eden’s Crush) and Melody Thornton rounded out the newly formed Pop group.
Pussycat Dolls: Recording PCD
By 2005, the Pussycat Dolls’ lineup included Nicole Scherzinger, Melody Thornton, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Kimberly Wyatt, and Kaya Jones. The group expanded its repertoire of Pop standards by adding fresh Pop, R&B, and Hip-Hop flavored songs, featuring guest rappers and popular producers. PCD made appearances in soundtracks for Shark Tale and Shall We Dance? in 2004.
In September 2005, the Pussycat Dolls released its first album PCD, which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The album produced the song “Don’t Cha” – a single that electrified the charts, radio airwaves, and nightclubs the world over. “Don’t Cha” snagged snagged a Billboard Music Award and officially marked the Pussycat Dolls’ arrival. More hits from PCD would follow, including “Stickwitu,” “Beep,” “Buttons,” “I Don’t Need a Man,” and “Wait A Minute.”
Pussycat Dolls: Touring
With plenty of radio and fan favorites under their belt, the Pussycat Dolls would be hot tickets on tour. In 2006, the group jaunted across North America with the headlining Black Eyed Peas. The Pussycat Dolls also toured the globe performing for ticketholders in the UK, Philippines, Malaysia, and beyond. From November 2006-January 2007, the Pussycat Dolls launched the PCD World Tour, inviting newcomer Rihanna as an opening act. Tickets would fly out of the box office when PCD opened for Christina Aguilera on her Back to Basics Tour.
Pussycat Dolls: Doll Domination
Pussycat Dolls member Carmit Bachar would leave the group in March 2008, but the girls would continue on as a quintet. The group returned in May 2008 with its new single “When I Grow Up” off of upcoming, Timbaland-produced album Doll Domination. Again, the Pussycat Dolls had another hit lined up before the album was released in September 2008. The second single from Doll Domination would be “I Hate This Part” and will likely be followed by “Bottle Pop.”
Pussycat Dolls: More Music Projects
Doll Domination would be rereleased as Doll Domination 2.0, featuring a handful of new tracks including “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny),” “Top of the World,” “Hush Hush,” and “Painted Windows.” The Mini Album will be released in the UK and will contain all UK singles from Doll Domination along with “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny) along with “Hush Hush,” and “Painted Windows.”
