ZZ Top: “La Grange” Lyrics
Rumor spreadin' around in that Texas town
'Bout that shack outside La Grange
And you know what I'm talkin' about.
Just let me know if you wanna go
To that home out on the range.
They gotta lotta nice girls ah.

Have mercy.
A pow, pow, pow, pow, a pow.
A pow, pow, pow.

Well, I hear it's fine if you got the time
And the ten to get yourself in.
A hmm, hmm.
And I hear it's tight most ev'ry night,
But now I might be mistaken.
Hmm, hmm, hmm.

Ah have mercy.

ZZ Top: “La Grange” Background
While a popular local act in Texas, ZZ Top – comprised of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill – struggled to find an audience in the early ‘70s. After releasing ZZ Top’s First Album and Rio Grande Mud in 1970 and 1972, respectively, ZZ Top enjoyed a breakthrough with the Blues-Rock album Tres Hombres in 1973. The single “La Grange” received national attention and would be the hook that ZZ Top needed to grow their fan base and sell tickets across the country.

ZZ Top: “La Grange” Sound & Success
Hands down one of the best known and loved ZZ Top songs of all time, “La Grange” peaked at No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1974. Regarded as almost a “one-chord blues” song, “La Grange” received ample amounts of radio airplay and has kept fans with ZZ Top tickets grooving. What ZZ Top ticketholders may not know is that the lyrics of the song refer to a bordello located just outside of La Grange, Texas. Later, this brothel has become known as the “Chicken Ranch,” which was the basis of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, a Broadway play and film.

ZZ Top: “La Grange” Live & On Tour
ZZ Top has been touring machines since they first got started in the 1970s. Fans with tickets to ZZ Top tour dates and many RodeoHouston performances have enjoyed electrifying renditions of songs such as “La Grange,” “Tush,” “Cheap Sunglasses,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and other concert set-list favorites. For more recent tours, ZZ Top fans have seen the band play “La Grange” and abruptly stop in midway through the song. At that point, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill will holler “Hell yeah!” and continue on with the song.

ZZ Top: “La Grange” Appearances
Along with plenty of radio airplay, “La Grange” has appeared in many other media, including films Shanghai Noon, Armageddon, The Dukes of Hazzard, Walking Tall, and many more. Cover versions by Tracy Byrd, Hank Williams Jr., and French artist Renaud Papillon Paravel. The mp3 generation may have heard covered versions of “La Grange” on video games Forza Motorsport, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and Guitar Hero: On Tour.
