Quinton Jackson: Early Life
Quinton Jackson first cut his teeth with wrestling in high school. Quinton Jackson proved to be very talented at combat sports, winning All-State honors in Tennessee. After exploring professional wrestling, Quinton Jackson attended junior college where he also wrestled. Seeing that his strong wrestling background and natural athleticism would provide him with an advantage in MMA, Quinton Jackson began training. Quinton Jackson would compile an 11-1 record in small American promotions, before getting his break from foreign sources.
Quinton Jackson: PRIDE
Quinton Jackson joined the Japanese MMA federation PRIDE Fighting in 2001. After being handed a loss to one of Japan’s top fighters, Quinton Jackson went on a winning streak. Quinton Jackson secured a large fan base in PRIDE thanks to his brutal slams and takedowns that mirrored professional wrestling. The single most famous move of his career was when Quinton Jackson countered a triangle choke with a powerbomb that knocked his opponent unconscious. Quinton Jackson still lists the powerbomb as his favorite maneuver. Proving himself to be more versatile than just a wrestler, Quinton Jackson also competed in kickboxing matches against K-1 fighters, winning both matches. A brutal rivalry with Wanderlei Silva over the PRIDE middleweight title proved fruitless, and Quinton Jackson moved on.
Quinton Jackson: UFC
Quinton Jackson originally signed a long-term deal with the World Fighting Alliance, but the organization was bought out by UFC. Now under contract with UFC, Quinton Jackson looked to capture the light heavyweight gold. In May of 2007, Rampage got his shot, taking on champion Chuck “Iceman” Liddell. The match was short, with Quinton Jackson putting down the Iceman in just under two minutes.
PRIDE was bought out by UFC in 2007, and the merger gave Quinton Jackson a shot at the title he had fought and bled for: the PRIDE middleweight championship. This time, American Dan Henderson held the belt. With his own championship up for grabs as well, Quinton Jackson met Henderson at UFC 75. A brutal five round contest was waged, with Quinton Jackson eventually winning by unanimous decision. Quinton Jackson unified the PRIDE middleweight and UFC light heavyweight belts.
Quinton Jackson: What’s Next?
After his championship win, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson took part as a coach for the Ultimate Fighter 7, where he led his team against that of fellow light heavyweight Forrest Griffin. Not only are their teams in competition, but Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will meet Forrest Griffin at UFC 86 with his belt on the line. The match looks to be a very unpredictable affair, pitting Forrest Griffin’s traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s unorthodox style of slams and brawling. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson brings an impressive 26 wins, 6 losses, and no draws into the UFC 86 match scheduled for July 5, 2008, inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
