Philadelphia Phillies

In 1980, the Philadelphia Phillies captured their first MLB World Series win in franchise history!

Philadelphia Phillies: 1980 Season

During the 1980 MLB season, the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies faced off against the Houston Astros in the National League Championship Series. Fans with Philadelphia Phillies tickets cheered as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Houston Astros 3-2, earning a trip to the MLB World Series. The Philadelphia Phillies would battle the AL West Champion Kansas City Royals, a team that just came off an American League Championship Series sweep over the New York Yankees.

Philadelphia Phillies: Firsts

Philadelphia Phillies manager Dallas Green and Kansas City Royals manager Jim Frey would look to lead their respective team to World Series gold. The Philadelphia Phillies would be making their first World Series appearance since the team lost to the New York Yankees in the 1950 World Series, while the Kansas City Royals – a team that joined the MLB as an expansion club in 1969 – would be making their first-ever appearance at the World Series. The 1980 World Series would also be the first World Series in MLB history to be played entirely on artificial turf.

Philadelphia Phillies: The Team
In 1980, Philadelphia Phillies tickets featured an explosive, well-balanced, veteran Philadelphia Phillies team. The Philadelphia Phillies roster included the 1980 MVP, third baseman Mike Schmidt along with the Cy Young Award winner, southpaw Steve Carlton. With Mike Schmidt (48 HR, 121 RBI) and veteran Pete Rose (185 hits, 42 doubles) leading the offensive charge, the Philadelphia Phillies topped the league in almost all offensive categories in the NL. Fans with Philadelphia Phillies tickets enjoyed watching the speedy Garry Maddox and Lonnie Smith combine for 68 steals on the season.
Steve Carlton (24-9, 2.34 ERA) bolstered the Philadelphia Phillies pitching staff, which also included the 17-game winner Dick Ruthven. Relief pitcher Tug McGraw (father of country-music singer Tim McGraw) would bring experience to the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen, having been to the World Series two times before with the New York Mets.

Philadelphia Phillies: Game 1
On October 14, 1980, fans with World Series tickets headed to Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for Game 1 of the World Series. The Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Bob Walk was the starting pitcher for the game and made history as the first rookie to start Game 1 of a World Series since the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Joe Black did so in 1952. The Kansas City Royals hit a couple of two-run bombs off of Bob Walk early, but the Philadelphia Phillies rallied back to reclaim the lead. Closer Tug McGraw tallied the save as the Philadelphia Phillies walked away with a 7-6 victory.

Philadelphia Phillies: Game 2
On October 15, 1980, World Series tickets welcomed baseball fans back into Veterans Stadium for Game 2 of the World Series. Fans with MLB World Series tickets enjoyed a heated pitcher’s duel between southpaws Steve Carlton and Larry Gura. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Philadelphia Phillies rallied back, scoring four runs and taking the lead in the eighth inning. The Philadelphia Phillies maintained their 6-4 lead, with Ron Reed picking up the save and Steve Carlton the win.

Philadelphia Phillies: Game 3
The Philadelphia Phillies led the World Series 2-0 as they headed to Kansas City, Missouri. Fans clamored to buy their World Series tickets and claim their seats inside Royals Stadium for Game 3, taking place on October 17, 1980. Kansas City refused to go down without a fight, taking Game 3 to a thrilling 10 innings. In the bottom of the 10th inning, MLB World Series tickets featured the Kansas City Royals’ Willie Aikens drove in Willie Wilson for the game-winning run.

Philadelphia Phillies: Game 4
Game 4 of the World Series was held on October 18, 1980, inside Royals Stadium once again. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, fans with MLB World Series tickets prepared for another exciting match up between the Philadelphia Phillies and Kansas City Royals. With an onslaught of hits and runs early in the game, the Kansas City Royals would take the lead and never lose it, winning the game 5-3. While the Kansas City Game 4 of the 1980 World Series is probably best known for the infamous brushback pitch that Philadelphia Phillies pitcher threw under the George Brett’s chin in the fourth inning, which Mike Schmidt hailed “the greatest brushback in World Series history.”

Philadelphia Phillies: Game 5
On October 19, 1980, World Series tickets featured another heated ballgame between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Kansas City Royals. While the Philadelphia Phillies scored two runs in the fourth inning, the Kansas City Royals surged back with three runs to jump in front, 3-2. Fans with Philadelphia Phillies tickets cheered as the Philadelphia Phillies posted two more runs playing small ball to go up 4-3 in the top of the ninth, but they held their breath as the Kansas City Royals threatened with the bases loaded and two outs. Closer Tug McGraw struck out Jose Cardenal to end the game, dashing any hopes of a dramatic Kansas City comeback.

Philadelphia Phillies: Game 6
The Philadelphia Phillies took their 3-2 World Series lead back to Veterans Stadium on October 21, 1980. Fans with MLB World Series tickets watched the Philadelphia Phillies pile on four runs and withstand bases-loaded situations in the eighth and the ninth innings. Closer Tug McGraw struck out Willie Wilson to lock up the Philadelphia Phillies World Series win, sending fans with Philadelphia Phillies tickets into a frenzy. The Philadelphia Phillies had just captured their first World Series championship in franchise history, making them the last of the “Original Sixteen” AL and NL teams to win a World Series. World Series tickets featured Mike Schmidt as the 1980 World Series MVP.
