Born on June 11, 1983, in San Leandro, California, Charles Edward Hayes, Jr. would grow up to be a talented all-around athlete, excelling in both football and basketball. In his junior year at California’s Modesto Christian High School, Chuck Hayes earned all-league and all-state honors. That same year, Chuck Hayes turned heads by hauling in an impressive 31 rebounds during the Northern California Championship Game. In his senior year, Chuck Hayes was crowned “Mr. Basketball” in California, earned Parade All-American honors, and led his team to the state title game.

Chuck Hayes: Kentucky Wildcats
After graduating high school, Chuck Hayes enrolled at University of Kentucky in 2001. At the end of his freshman campaign, Chuck Hayes was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team. Over the next three seasons, Chuck Hayes – along with Keith Bogans, Kelenna Azubuike, Erik Daniels and Gerald Fitch – helped lead the Kentucky basketball renaissance en route to an 87-15 record and high AP rankings.
