LSU Tigers vs. Green Wave Overview:
Having been the biggest rivalry in Louisiana football history, the Battle for the Rag has been an ongoing struggle between the LSU Tigers and the Tulane Green Wave that started in 1893. After years off, the Battle for the Rag was restarted in 2006. In recent years, the LSU Tigers have taken a significant lead thanks to a de-emphasis on athletics at Tulane University. The LSU Tigers have had their share of struggles, however, and the No. 15 team could be upset by their instate rivals if they go to sleep on them. Fans with LSU Tigers tickets will fill Tiger Stadium to watch this historic series continue.
LSU Tigers Offense:
The center of the LSU Tigers attack is RB Charles Scott. One of the best pure runners in the SEC, Charles Scott has won a National Title and two Battles for the Rag. The LSU Tigers favor running to the left side behind great LT Ciron Black and giant LG Herman Johnson with the enormous FB Quinn Johnson paving the way. Young QB Jarrett Lee is a raw talent and has been forced into the starting role after the incumbent was removed from the team. WRs Brandon LaFell and Demetrius Byrd are an outstanding senior combination.
LSU Tigers Defense:
The LSU Tigers defense tries to move on without Glen Dorsey in the lineup, and the defensive line is still the strength of the team. DT Ricky Jean-Francois is the next superstar LSU Tigers defensive lineman and is one of the best in college football. DE Tyson Jackson is a senior and a great player against the run and pass. Three-year letterman LB Darry Beckwith has been a favorite of fans with LSU Tigers tickets, and he wants to end his college career on a high note. FS Curtis Taylor is a three-year starter and is another great safety in the long history of LSU football.
Tulane Green Wave Offense:
The Power-I offense of the Tulane Green Wave is built around RB Andre Anderson who is a little nicked up after a tough battle with the Rice Owls and will be a game-time decision. Veteran linemen Tyler Rice and Nick Landry form a solid right side of the line, and this is the preferred point of attack. Freshman QB Joe Kemp will get the start and has a big upside, impressing coaches and fans with his performance against the Rice Owls. WR Jeremy Williams is the leading target in the Tulane Green Wave passing game.
Tulane Green Wave Defense:
The Tulane Green Wave defense is undersized on the line but is still quick to the ball. Senior MLB David Kirksey is the leader of the Tulane Green Wave defense and is the biggest linebacker in the speedy second level. Sophomore LB Devin Holland had a breakout game against the Rice Owls and will look to make his mark in his first Battle for the Rag. Senior CB Cory Sonnier is the leader of the small but athletic Tulane Green Wave secondary.
LSU Tigers Keys to Victory:
The small stature of the Tulane Green Wave defense leaves them wide open to the huge offensive line of the LSU Tigers and the running attack of Charles Scott. The left side of the LSU offensive line has a weight advantage over 120 pounds per man, and the push will be felt there all game long. Controlling the line of scrimmage will be a relatively easy task for the LSU Tigers on paper thanks to their size and experience advantages. The size and experience game jumps to the LSU Tigers again with the senior WRs standing over the young CBs of the Green Wave.
The Tulane Green Wave want to establish the run thanks to their Power-I scheme so the LSU Tigers must clog the line of scrimmage. The dual threat of DE Tyson Jackson and DE Ricky Jean-Francois should be able to take on the Tulane Green Wave linemen and could collapse the running lanes all day. LB Derry Beckwith will be running all over the field and will be a recurring nightmare for running backs and tight ends. FS Curtis Taylor could easily add more picks to his resumé with a freshman QB making his first trip to Death Valley.
Tulane Keys to Victory:
The odds are against the young Tulane Green Wave, but they have a load of young talent that does not fear the LSU Tigers. QB Joe Kemp will step into his first start in the dreaded Tiger Stadium, and he cannot let the loudest crowd in the NCAA rattle him. Freshman RB Nathan Austin may get the start and his receiving ability will be a big help to Joe Kemp. The Tulane Green Wave must counter the monstrous pair of Tyson Jackson and Ricky Jean-Francois.
The LSU Tigers want to ram Charles Scott down the throat of the Tulane Green Wave, and the defense must tighten up to stop the run. Giving up a ton of size to the LSU Tigers offensive line, the Tulane Green Wave will have to bring safeties into the box and blitz on every play. They do have the speed to minimize big gains, and the Tulane Green Wave can get some turnovers off the mistake-prone QB Jarrett Lee, and a key pick could turn the momentum for the underdog team.
LSU Tigers vs. Tulane Outlook:
The Battle for the Rag has been a resounding success in cross-state bragging rights for fans with LSU Tigers tickets. The LSU Tigers have not lost the matchup since 1982, and the No. 15 team is bigger in size and pure talent. Upsets have been the flavor of the year in the NCAA, and the Tulane Green Wave is due for a win. The LSU Tigers will be focused on their showdown with the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Battle for the Rag has all the makings of a trap game.
LSU Tigers head coach Les Miles will not let his team get caught sleeping, and the alumni pressure to win the Battle of the Rag will keep the players on their toes. Fans with LSU Tigers tickets selling out Tiger Stadium will not let their team lose focus either. The Week 11 game against the Alabama Crimson Tide will steal plenty of attention from the LSU Tigers locker room, and the Tulane Green Wave will give their all. The LSU Tigers just have the advantage in size, experience, and the loudest stadium in college football.
