New York Giants History Part 3 (1990-Present)

Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning, and Michael Strahan define a new age of New York Giants football history!

New York Giants: Coach Hunt
The golden age of the New York Giants and their Big Blue defense ended after Super Bowl XXV. Head coach Bill Parcells decided to go into a media career and defensive coordinator Bill Belichick took the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns. The changing of the guard at the top trickled downward, and age also began to catch up with the legendary team. Fans with New York Giants tickets were not happy with the new head coach of the NY Giants and felt that promoting offensive coordinator Ray Handley over Bill Belichick was a mistake, something it obviously was.

After two poor years under Ray Handley, the great Dan Reeves came over from the Denver Broncos in 1993. The biggest impact that Dan Reeves had early was the 1993 NFL Draft where he selected DE Michael Strahan and LB Jessie Armstead, two building blocks for a decade of New York Giants dominance. The retirement of Phil Simms and the drafting of bust QB Dave Brown left the New York Giants as a powerful defensive team with no offense.

New York Giants: Super Bowl Return
Dan Reeves was fired in 1997 and fans with New York Giants tickets cheered as Dave Brown was benched. Offensive guru Jim Fassell was installed as the new head coach, and he went about making drastic changes along with new GM Ernie Accorsi. The duo in the front office quickly went about stockpiling offensive talent like WRs Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard. The drafting of RB Tiki Barber in the 1997 NFL Draft gave the New York Giants a great running back to round out the offense.

The biggest piece of the puzzle came with the singing of QB Kerry Collins in 1999. By the time the 2000-01 NFL season had rolled around, the New York Giants had a great offense constructed with Kerry Collins and Tiki Barber leading the way. DE Michael Strahan, MLB Jessie Armstead, and CB Jason Sehorn were the leaders of a great defense that specialized in stopping the pass.

New York Giants: Super Bowl XXXV
The New York Giants earned a 12-4 record in the 2000-01 NFL season and used the home-field advantage for all it’s worth. Fans with New York Giants tickets cheered on their team as they upset Randy Moss and the dynamic Minnesota Vikings in a total rout. After destroying that offensive powerhouse, the New York Giants faced one of the best defenses in NFL history in the Baltimore Ravens at Super Bowl XXXV.

The New York Giants had won all their championships on defense, but the 2000 Baltimore Ravens were a new breed of animal. MLB Jamal Lewis led the total destruction of Kerry Collins and the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. The pounding running attack of Jamal Lewis put the nail in the coffin, and the New York Giants were eventually handed a 34-7 loss thanks to one of the best defensive performances in Super Bowl history.

Following Super Bowl XXXV, the New York Giants were never totally able to right the ship. Even the addition of TE Jeremy Shockey was not enough to bring the New York Giants back to the Super Bowl. After a few more years of good but not great football, fans with New York Giants tickets began to call for a new coach and QB. By 2004, the fans got their wish when Tom Coughlin took over as head coach and Eli Manning came to town in the 2004 NFL Draft. Things would take a while to get rolling, but a new age of New York Giants dominance was on the horizon.

As any rookie QB does, Eli Manning would struggle his first year. Veteran players like DE Michael Strahan and RB Tiki Barber did their best to help the young player along and also provided Pro-Bowl talent to the New York Giants roster. Tom Coughlin and Ernie Accorsi had both planned to build from the inside out, and the New York Giants were quietly building the best offensive and defensive lines in football. The arrival of WR Plaxico Burress gave Eli Manning the go-to receiver he needed, and fans with New York Giants tickets were being rewarded for their years of patience.

The New York Giants had difficulty getting much traction in the NFC East as they had to face the dominant Philadelphia Eagles and the resurgent Dallas Cowboys twice a year. The retirement of Tiki Barber in 2007 left fans in doubt of the future of the franchise.

The emergence of RB Brandon Jacobs also minted the team a new identity as a pounding power-run team. Eli Manning also developed well and led the New York Giants to a wildcard berth in the playoffs. The unmatched pass rush of the New York Giants carried the team to three-straight road victories in the playoffs and got them to Super Bowl XLII, sending fans with New York Giants tickets into a frenzy!

The New York Giants faced the undefeated New England Patriots. Only fans with New York Giants tickets had faith in their team to pull the biggest upset of all time. The pass rush of the New York Giants destroyed Tom Brady and the New England Patriots spread offense, but the game came down to Eli Manning. Throwing off all doubters, Eli Manning executed a brilliant last-minute drive that included a miracle catch by David Tyree and a clutch touchdown throw to Plaxico Burress to seal the win.
