You’re probably asking yourself: who exactly are these strange, mute blue men in black shirts?
You may have seen them on television commercials. You may have seen them on Swatch advertisements. You may have seen them on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno or Live With Regis and Kelly. If you’ve flown from Las Vegas recently, you may have seen them featured on the television screens in front of security check-in.
Who are they you ask?
They’re the Blue Man Group, a trio of curious blue men who perform rock concerts, stage dinners with Twinkies, paint portraits of contemporary art, occasionally shower audience members with Cap’n Crunch cereal, and present many more antics in a hysterical, satirical one-hour portrayal of modern life.
Where did the Blue Man Group come from?
The Blue Man Group may be a worldwide sensation today, but their success certainly did not come to them immediately. In 1980, Blue Man Group founders Phil Stanton, Chris Wink, and Matt Goldman would don the now-famous black attire, latex caps, and blue paint and perform for passersby on the streets of New York. They eventually began performing in comedy clubs and garnered so much attention that in 1991, the Blue Man Group received their own off-Broadway show, Tubes.
Soon afterwards, the Blue Man Group’s popularity skyrocketed. Audiences from across the country would come see these blue creatures poke fun at modern society through intense portrayals of science, psychology, and the arts. And in 2007, people from all around the world are still flocking to see the Blue Man Group perform live.
Because the Blue Man Group’s shows often break the fourth wall, audiences themselves can anticipate involvement in the show at any given time. Those with front-row seats can expect to be given a plastic poncho for protection against food, paint, and other objects thrown from the stage. Audience members can also be asked to perform challenges such as “information overload,” where they must choose one out of three simultaneous streams of information to read, or they can be invited onto the stage for a Twinkie dinner with the Blue Men.
Finally, audiences can expect to observe one of the most exhilarating performances of their lifetime once the Blue Men perform their famous rock concert, where the Blue Man Group not only use typical instruments such as drums and guitars, but also PVC pipes, airpoles, and hammered dulcimers. The Blue Man Group’s ingenious music has been featured on the soundtracks for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Robots, and the 2008 film Space Chimps, and the Blue Man Group has also performed their music on numerous award shows, talk shows, and baseball games.
With such creative, unique, and imaginative performances, it’s no wonder that the Blue Man Group is still around in 2008 and has become more popular than ever. Since their start in 1980 and first off-Broadway show in New York, the Blue Man Group has opened shows in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas at the Venetian, Germany, and most recently, Universal Studios in Orlando.
