About Erykah Badu

Born in Dallas, Texas, on February 26, 1971, Erykah Badu was heavily influenced by her mother, who was an actress in the local theater company. Erykah Badu briefly attended Grambling State University to study theater but dropped out to pursue a music career in 1993. Erykah Badu put together a demo tape with her cousin Robert “Free” Bradford called Country Cousins. The demo tape paved the way to Erykah Badu’s 1996 duet “Your Precious Love” with R&B star D’Angelo.

Erykah Badu released her first album Baduizm in 1997. The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart selling over 3 million copies and winning the Grammy for “Best R&B Album.” The first single “On & On” off Baduizm rose to No. 1 on the R&B charts and also won the Grammy for “Best Female R&B Vocal.” With Baduizm, Erykah Badu became known as one of the leaders of Neo-Soul and often drew comparisons to singer Billie Holiday.

Erykah Badu’s first live album Live was released in late 1997 and featured the No. 1 R&B single “Tyrone.” Erykah Badu branched out into acting with the 1998 film Blues Brothers 2000 and the 1999 Oscar-winning Cider House Rules. In 2000, Erykah Badu released her second album Mama’s Gun, which peaked at No. 3 on the R&B charts and sold over 1 million copies. The first single “Bag Lady” gave Erykah Badu her third No. 1 R&B hit.

In 2003, Erykah Badu released Worldwide Underground, featuring the single “Danger.” In 2008, Erykah Badu released her latest album New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), featuring the lead single “Honey.” The album debuted at No. 2 simultaneously on the Billboard 200 and R&B chart.
