About Louis Armstrong Stadium

Named after Louis Armstrong, the famous jazz musician, the Louis Armstrong Stadium located in Flushing, New York, is the second tennis stadium of the U.S. Open, the last of each year’s four Grand Slam tournaments. During its peak usage, the Louis Armstrong Stadium held 18,000 fans. In 1997, the Louis Armstrong Stadium was renovated reducing its capacity to about 10,000 and adding a brick façade to match that of the adjacent Ashe Stadium, which was created twenty years earlier after dividing the Louis Armstrong Stadium into two. The Arthur Ashe Stadium is now the main stadium for the tennis U.S. Open, while the Louis Armstrong Stadium is the second court.

Since 1978, the U.S. Open tennis tournament has been played on acrylic hard court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center which holds the Louis Armstrong Stadium. All the courts used by the U.S. Open at the Louis Armstrong Stadium are well lit for optimal television coverage of the tennis U.S. Open. In 2005, all tennis U.S. Open and U.S. Open Series tennis courts at the Louis Armstrong Stadium were given blue inner courts and green outer courts to make it easier to see the ball. In addition, at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, the tennis U.S. Open uses a DecoTurf surface, which has slightly less friction and producing a lower bounce compared to other hard courts.

The tennis U.S. Open is held annually in the Louis Armstrong Stadium in August and September over a two-week period around the time of Labor Day weekend, a perfect time to enjoy the great tennis tradition of the U.S. Open.
