Broken Social Scene, established in 1999, is the brainchild of Toronto natives Kevin Drew and bassist Brendan Canning. BSS is characterized by lush orchestrations from traditional guitars to horn sections and woodwinds. Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning released BSS’s first full-length album, the largely instrumental Feel Good Lost in 2001. The pair recruited friends and Toronto musicians Andrew Whiteman, Jason Collett, Leslie Feist and Emily Haines to join them on tour.
Broken Social Scene grew into a massive collective with as many as 19 members contributing to the creative process and subsequent promotional tours. Nearly all of Broken Social Scene’s members have side projects including the Apostle of Hustle (Andrew Whiteman), Do Make Say Think (Julie Penner and Ohad Benchetrit), Stars (Amy Milan), Metric (Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw) and the most well-known, Feist (Leslie Feist).
Broken Social Scene released You Forgot It in People in 2002. The album featured a number of popular songs including “Almost Crimes,” “Lover’s Spit” and “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.” In 2004, Broken Social Scene released a collection of B-sides called Bee Hives. In 2005, BSS released a self-titled full-length album, which featured the songs “7/4 (Shoreline)” and “Fire Eye’d Boy.”
In 2007, Broken Social Scene began a series entitled Broken Social Scene Presents to feature the solo efforts by members of the collective, beginning with BSS founder Kevin Drew. Spirit If… broke into the Billboard Top 200 and shot to No. 1 on the Heatseekers chart. BSS co-founder Brendan Canning’s Broken Social Scene Presents Something for All of Us… will be released in 2008. Order your Broken Social Scene concert tickets from OnlineTickets.com!
