In 1981, a foursome of musicians formed Metallica and would soon become icons in the Rock-music scene. Drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist James Hetfield founded the band but quickly brought in two future Rock legends in bassist Cliff Burton and guitarist Dave Mustaine. Coming together in a time when metal was defined by the Glam movement, Metallica focused on aggression and technical prowess – a stark contrast to the simple riffs and decadent lyrics found in most of LA’s scene. Soon after, Thrash Metal was born from this style and would go on to redefine the genre.
Dave Mustaine eventually left Metallica to form Megadeth and was replaced by current guitarist Kirk Hammett. With their groundbreaking album Kill ‘em All, Metallica gained a cult following that would carry them to superstardom. After years of touring with extreme and underground bands, Metallica finally found mainstream success with the album …And Justice for All which spawned the hit song “Enter Sandman”. Metallica would go on to record the watershed album Metallica, better know as “The Black Album”. Soon after, Metallica became full-blown superstars and one of the baddest bands in heavy metal.
Metallica tickets became an even hotter commodity with the release of albums Load and ReLoad. Featuring many modern Metallica songs like “Nothing Else Matters”, “Fuel”, “Unforgiven II”, and “The Memory Remains”, the albums introduced an entire new generation. Fans were going out and learning Metallica lyrics and guitar tabs thanks to the mainstream approach. The following Metallica tours would set the standard for Metal tours as Metallica sold out arenas, stadiums and concert tickets galore.
Metallica released their new album Death Magnetic in 2008 and sold out venues with every tour date in the United States. Metallica lived on the road in 2009 and 2010, playing shows on every continent in the world. Metallica joined forces with the other Big 4 of Thrash, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax, for a select few shows in 2011, possibly setting the stage for more shows in the future. Metallica will be busy in 2012, with several international tour dates and festivals scheduled. Metallica will also top the lineup for both days of the Orion Music Festival in Atlantic City.
