Citing Little Richard, Van Morrison, and Elvis Presley as some of his musical influences, Bob Seger took a cosmopolitan interest in music very early in his life. At the age of 16, Bob Seger was a member of the group The Decibels where he met future manager Punch Andrews. After returning to Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bob Seger released and recorded the song “Ballad of the Green Berets” with Doug Brown and the Omens.
In 1966, Bob Seger formed his own group Bob Seger and the Last Heard and together they released their first big album East Side Story. After signing with Capitol Records and forming the new group The Bob Seger System, Bob Seger changed his style from the ballad-oriented tunes that initially defined his career to the politically punk sounds of his next single “2=2+?” – an anti-war track that was released off of the album Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man. The Bob Seger System then released “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” leading to Bob Seger’s first nationally charted album.
Bob Seger released two follow-up albums, Noah and Mongrel, which failed to reach the same level of commercial success as Ramblin Gamblin Man. In 1971, The Bob Seger System disbanded and Bob Seger released a couple of albums as a solo artist. Bob Seger’s live album Live Bullet and the track “Katmandu” were commercial hits, but it wasn’t until 1976 that Bob Seger achieved breakthrough commercial success with album Night Moves which spawned the hit tracks “Night Moves” and “Mainstreet”.
Bob Seger reeled off hit after hit with the release of the songs “Still the Same”, “Hollywood Nights”, and “We’ve Got Tonight”, all of which fared better in the Top 20 charts. “Old Time Rock and Roll” went on to become one of the most recognized songs of Bob Seger’s career. Still a commercial gem, Bob Seger’s 2006 album Face the Promise sold over a million copies, with 2014 release Ride Out nearly matching it..
