Maynard James Keenan garnered a reputation as a symbol more than a man in the 1990s while fronting the iconic Tool. Fusing Industrial and Alternative, Tool became known for its enigmatic leader almost as much as it was for David Lynch-styled music videos. In a effort to push even further beyond the veil of musical limitations, Maynard James Keenan would found a second band at the close of the 1990s. Joined by former Nine Inch Nails musician Billy Howerdell, Maynard James Keenan would formA Perfect Circle, a symbol for the basis of all art.
Debut album Mer De Noms was a distinct departure from Tool, as was its intention. Meandering and deep single “3 Libras” became a quiet hit, haunting listeners with a tale of unrequited love.A Perfect Circlewould get its signature song “Judith” from Mer De Noms as well. A narrative of religion, illness, death, and loss, “Judith” did return to some earlier themes touched upon by Tool, but layered them with much-deeper emotion. Mer De Noms was a critical and commercial success, makingA Perfect Circlemore than a side-project.
Follow-up album The Thirteenth Step upped the ante in regards to visuals-through-sound. Thanks to an acclaimed and trippy video “Weak and Powerless” became a hit on TV and fledgling internet sites. Single “The Outsider” was a favorite to fans and the unaccustomed alike thanks to the unexpected introduction of the Bikini Bandits in the music video. Since many directors could not grasp the concepts of A Perfect Circles music to their liking, the band would often use the buxom Bikini Bandits in later videos instead of something more contextual.
The next phase ofA Perfect Circle’s discography was remix/cover album Emotive, which was a political statement aimed at the 2004 election.A Perfect Circlewould take a multi-year hiatus after the release, focusing on bands like Tool, Ashes Divide, and Puscifer.A Perfect Circleannounced a reunion in 2010 and played limited dates on the West Coast in preparation for new music.A Perfect Circleperformed three-separate dates in each city, playing a different album cover-to-cover at each tour date.
