About Jewel

Folk singer-songwriter Jewel was born in Payson, Utah, on May 23, 1974. Jewel spent her formative years alongside her father in Homer, Alaska. After attending Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan, Jewel became a capable songwriter and guitar player. Jewel moved to San Diego, California, in the early 1990s to live with her mother and soon made the decision to focus solely on her music career when Jewel became dissatisfied with dead-end jobs.

Jewel began living out of her van and performing in various San Diego-area businesses such as Java Joe’s and Innerchange. Jewel had impressed Atlantic Records with her local following and signed her in 1995. Jewel’s debut album Pieces of You was released that same year. Pieces of You spent nearly two years on the charts, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

The lead single off of Pieces of You was “Who Will Save Your Soul.”  The second single “You Were Meant For Me” peaked at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.  In 1998, Jewel released her first book of poetry A Night Without Armor and her second album Spirit, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Jewel released her autobiography Chasing Down the Dawn in 2000.

In 2003, Jewel shocked fans by recording her first dance-pop record 0304. The album featured the single “Intuition” which quickly climbed up the pop charts. In 2008, Jewel released her sixth album Perfectly Clear, her first country-music album, which was produced by John Rich of Big & Rich.
