With a high athletic IQ and amazing ability, Kenny Florian flourished in sports like soccer and Muay Thai Kickboxing. This solid athletic background eventually landed Kenny Florian a scholarship to Boston College. As a key member of the Boston College Eagles soccer team, Kenny Florian was a Big East Academic All-Star. With his college career behind him, Kenny Florian was able to focus on mixed martial arts.
Kenny Florian: Fighting Style
The aggressive striking style of Muay Thai Kickboxing had been a dominant force in mixed martial arts and other tournaments for decades. The arrival of grappler/wrestler Randy "The Natural" Couture and the generation of fighters that followed put more emphasis on the ground attack and nearly put traditional fighters out of a job. Kenny Florian was cast in The Ultimate Fighter 1 as a member of Team Couture. Under the leadership of the UFC Hall of Fame fighter, Kenny Florian blew through the other middleweight fighters and gained a spot atop the Ultimate Fighter 1: Finale card. In a brutal match with Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian came up just short thanks to a TKO loss. Even in defeat, it was seen that Kenny Florian had major UFC potential.

In his first bout against Alex Karalexis, Kenny Florian deployed his emphasis elbows to bust open the face of his opponent. The second UFC fight for Kenny Florian took just over 30 seconds in the second round as he employed his trusty rear naked choke on a very surprised and overwhelmed Kit Cope. Sam Stout of The Ultimate Fighter 3 likewise became acquainted with the rear naked choke and was easily introduced to the sandman by Kenny Florian.
Kenny Florian received a shot against controversial ground-attack master Sean Sherk for the UFC Lightweight Championship. As a ton of fans with UFC tickets cheered on, the two bulls pushed each other to the limit, and the match went all three rounds. Eventually the judges awarded the win to Sean Sherk, but Kenny Florian had won the respect of UFC fighters and fans alike. Kenny Florian quickly put this loss out of his mind and ran the table for the remainder of his fights with a 5-0 winning streak, including an acclaimed fight with Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 13.
