Shane Battier: Early Years

Born on September 9, 1978, in Birmingham, Michigan, Shane Courtney Battier would excel in a number of extracurricular activities, from playing the trumpet to playing basketball. Shane Battier would kick off his basketball career while attending Detroit Country Day School, a private school in Beverley Hills, Michigan. After leading his high school basketball team to three-straight state championships, Shane Battier was honored as "Mr. Basketball of Michigan" in 1997.

Shane Battier: Duke Blue Devils

Shane Battier would enroll at Duke University, where he was a standout in both academics and on the hardwood. During his four-year college career, Shane Battier led the Duke Blue Devils to two Final Four appearances, losing to the UConn Huskies in 1999 but bouncing back with a NCAA Championship victory in 2001 over the Arizona Wildcats. Shane Battier was honored as the 2001 National Championship Game MVP.

In May 2001, Shane Battier graduated from Duke University, boasting a degree in Comparative Religion along with numerous accolades and awards: consensus national player of the year award, the Naismith and John Wooden Award, academic player of the year, and three defensive player of the year awards to boot. As the first player in ACC history to finish his college career with at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 200 assists, 200 steals, and 200 blocks, Shane Battier was poised to be an NBA star.
