Mana was formed in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1978 by vocalist Fernando “Fher” Olvera, guitarist Gustavo Orozco and the Calleros Brothers: bassist Juan Diego, guitarist Ulises and drummer Abraham. Mana was originally called Sombrero Verde (Green Hat) and performed mostly Beatles and Led Zeppelin covers. Wanting to move toward a more original sound that was infused with their Latin roots, the band changed its name to Mana, the Polynesian word for “positive energy.”
Mana released its second album Falta Amor (Lacking Love) in 1990 on Warner Bros. Mana finally achieved success with the single “Rayando el Sol” and performed over 350 shows in support of Falta Amor. In 1992, Mana released Dónde Jugarán Los Niños (Where Will the Children Play?) to great commercial success. The album sold over 1 million copies and produced eight singles including “Vivir Sin Aire,” “Cómo Te Deseo” and “Oye Mi Amor.”
In 1997, Mana released its fifth album Sueños Liquidos (Liquid Dreams). The album won a Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Performance and sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone. In 2002, Mana released Revolución de Amor (Revolution of Love), which featured collaborations with superstars Carlos Santana and Rubén Blades. The album produced the singles "Ángel de Amor" and “Mariposa Traicionera.”
Mana’s seventh album Amar es Combatir debuted at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 200, becoming a cross-over hit and spawning the successful single “Labios Compartidos.” In 2008, Mana released the live album Arde el Cielo, which produced the hit single "Si No Te Hubieras Ido." Cultivating a global audience over their long history, Mana will travel the world thanks to new album Drama y Luz.
