A music teacher first discovered R. Kelly’s talents in high school, inspiring R. Kelly to hit the Chicago streets with his keyboard in tow. Bus stations and street corners were not enough for an artist of R. Kelly’s caliber, so R. Kelly teamed up with childhood friend Marc McWilliams to form the group MGM. Soon the group changed its name to Public Announcement and was discovered by Jive Records executives.
Public Announcement’s popularity soared with hits like “Dedicated” and “Honey Love”; R. Kelly left the group to launch a solo career. With 12 Play R. Kelly burst onto the music scene as a solo act. Pretty soon R. Kelly brought acts like Aaliyah and Changing Faces to the mainstream as a record producer. Around this time R. Kelly also produced for Janet Jackson and worked on the Michael Jackson hit “You Are Not Alone”.
In 1996 Michael Jordan asked R. Kelly to produce a song for the Space Jam soundtrack, and “I Believe I Can Fly” became one of R. Kelly’s biggest hits to date. The RIAA lists R. Kelly as one of the top 40 bestselling artists in history. Every year since 2002, R. Kelly has delighted fans with an album. 2007’s Double Up included the single “Same Girl”, a duet with Usher.
The fourth chapter of R. Kelly’s 12 Play series called 12 Play: Fourth Quarter is due to be released in late 2008. Fans are clamoring to see R. Kelly in concert when he performs in arenas nationwide in 2008. Whether you want to groove to “Step in the Name of Love” or “Happy People”, don’t miss the Pied Piper of R&B on tour when you order R.
