A legend was born on the street corners in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California. Twin brothers Walter and Wallace Scott were joined by Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson and Gordy Harmon and the smooth sound of the Whispers was born in 1963. While perfecting their sound on corners in Watts and in nightclubs in the Bay Area, the group was known as the Eden Trio. Renamed The Whispers by Lou Bedell, the group began recording in 1964 and the Whispers released their first album The Time Will Come in 1969.
Though The Whispers had already garnered a huge following in Southern California, their mainstream success didn’t come until the release of their first Top 10 R&B hit “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong” in 1970 under Janus Records. Around this time Gordy Harmon was replaced by Leaviel Degree from The Friends of Distinction. Racking up a string of hits over the next couple of decades, The Whispers became known as the leading romantic singers of their generation.
When Marcus Hutson passed on in 2000, the living members of The Whispers vowed to never replace him and since then have kept that promise. The Whispers have recently sold out hotels and casinos all over Las Vegas and have continued their four-decade reign over R&B. West Coast fans of the Whispers have remained loyal and continue to support one of R&B’s most celebrated groups.
After four decades of romantic hits, The Whispers are taking their show on the road.
